Many find charm in such traditions as instructions in pink tape, chambers in
the Inns or Victorian squares, stiff collars and pinstripe trousers and
corresponding with counsel through a clerk. Some even think they add dignity
to the profession. We think they are expensive.
We believe that high quality specialist legal services which the bar
supplies should be affordable. However, we also believe that barristers are
entitled to a good living. The only way both objectives can be achieved is
by our working smarter. That requires cutting unnecessary expense and making full use of modern
technology.
As far as expenses are concerned, the biggest overhead for most barristers are their
accommodation. We have saved ourselves a fortune by basing ourselves not in
Lincoln's Inn, nor even in in Park Square or St John Street, but in the
Kirklees Media
Centre. The rent is a fraction of the cost of office
accommodation in central Leeds or Manchester let alone central London.
However, we did not choose the Media Centre just to save money.
Another big attraction is that it houses just the sort of creative and
innovative businesses that NIPC was set up to serve, There is always a
constant buzz at the Centre as designers meet marketers, academics business
angels, bright young men and women potential investors. Just being there
gives us valuable insight as to the sort of services that start-ups and
other small businesses need from their lawyers.
Our clients communicate with each other, with their customers and indeed
with most of their other suppliers by VoIP telephony and instant messaging.
They want their lawyers to do the same. So we do. If we
want information and documents we will specify what we need in a simple
electronic form.
We do a lot of things to help our clients identify their needs such as
conferences and seminars and monthly IP clinics in various towns and cities.
We have assisted them to obtain funding for our services by registering with
the Yorkshire and Humberside, East Midlands and other brokerage platforms.
