CounselCounsel (or "barristers") are self-employed lawyers who specialize either as advocates or consultants in particular areas of the law. Although other professionals now have the right to present cases in the superior courts, most of that work is still done by barristers. Barristers specializing in intellectual property and technology law advise patent agents, solicitors and other clients on difficult points of law, draft complex legal instruments and present cases to the Patents and Patents County Courts, Patent Office hearing officers and other tribunals. They can therefore assist in identifying intellectual assets intellectual assets in intellectual property audits, opposition or other proceedings before the Patent Office or appeals to the Patents Court, enforcement and licensing. NIPC has four barristers - John Lambert, Lois Cole-Wilson, Alex Khan and Richard Aird. The first three practise primarily in England and Wales while Richard Aird practises primarily in Scotland. Each of them covers the whole range of intellectual property and technology work though John Lambert has a special interest in information and communications technology and e-commerce, Lois Cole-Wilson in media and entertainment work, Alex Khan in biotechnology and plant varieties and Richard Aird in cross-border enforcement. Between them they cover the country. Lois-Cole Wilson is available for emergency applications in London and the South, Richard Aird in Scotland and John Lambert and Alex Khan in the North and Midlands.
